What it means
NFPA 70B was a recommended practice for decades. The 2023 edition turned it into a standard with mandatory language, and the 2026 edition is now current. It requires equipment owners to establish and document an electrical maintenance program: who’s responsible, what equipment needs maintenance, how often, how the work is done and how it’s recorded.
Maintenance intervals are based on an assessment of each piece of equipment’s physical condition, criticality and operating environment. The standard also expects accurate, up-to-date single-line diagrams, and it works alongside manufacturers’ instructions rather than replacing them.
NFPA 70B becomes enforceable for a facility when something requires it — such as a jurisdiction, regulation, contract or insurer — and the edition that applies depends on what that requirement references.
An example: a hospital’s insurer asks for a documented electrical maintenance program. The hospital hires an electrical contractor to survey its equipment, assess condition, update its single-line diagrams and carry out testing on the intervals the program sets.
