What it means
A line card answers a contractor’s first question: “Can you get me this?” It shows which manufacturers a distributor works with — for example, in power distribution, wire and cable, lighting, controls and wiring devices — and often which branches stock them and who to contact.
Line cards have traditionally been printed or shared as PDFs. Today, the most useful line cards are also published on the distributor’s website as searchable text, linked to product pages and branch pages, so contractors — and search engines — can find which brands the distributor carries and where.
An example: a contractor needs a particular brand of lighting controls for a job in a new area. They search online, find a nearby distributor’s website, and see on its line card that the brand is stocked at the local branch, with the name of the lighting specialist to call.
Why it matters
- For contractors, a clear line card saves calls and shows where to buy.
- For distributors, it’s one of the simplest ways to be found by contractors searching for a brand nearby.
