What it means
Cut sheets — also called datasheets, spec sheets or product data sheets — describe a product in enough detail for an engineer to confirm it meets the project specifications: ratings, dimensions, materials, mounting, finishes and the options available under each catalog number.
In a submittal, the contractor includes a cut sheet for each product and clearly marks the exact catalog number and options being provided, so the reviewer knows precisely what will be installed. Cut sheets are also gathered again for closeout documentation at the end of a project.
An example: for a lighting submittal, the contractor includes the cut sheet for each fixture type, highlights the exact catalog number — including lumen package, color temperature, voltage and finish — and crosses out the options that don’t apply.
Why it matters
- Faster approvals. Clearly marked, current cut sheets reduce the chance of a submittal coming back.
- The right product on site. The marked cut sheet ties the approved product to what’s ordered and installed.
